In the fall of 1976 he shifted his focus towards Intercollegiate sailing, winning the Intercollegiate Singlehanded Championship in the Spring if 1977 and being named College Sailor of the Year and a member of the All-American Team. Carl recalls that his singlehanded win was one he is most proud of, racing against some very talented peers such as Peter Commette, Augie Diaz and Terry McLaughlin.
