Carl arrived on the University of Washington campus as a freshman in the fall of 1975 while preparing for the 1976 Olympic Trials in the Finn Class held that Spring. In the fall of 1976 he shifted his focus towards Intercollegiate sailing, winning the Intercollegiate Singlehanded Championship in the Spring if 1977 and being named College Sailor of the Year and a member of the All-American Team. Carl recalls that his singlehanded win was one he is most proud of, racing against some very talented peers such as Peter Commette, Augie Diaz and Terry McLaughlin.

Besides the Youth World Championship and an Olympic gold medal, he holds world titles in the Flying Dutchman, Star, and Tasar. North American titles include the Laser, Soling, Star, 505 and Tasar. Look for Carl in the Husky Sports Hall of Fame in the Alaska Airlines Arena.
